About this property
A substantial and characterful 19th-century semi-detached residence occupying an enviable position on one of St Asaph's most sought-after roads, with extensive private gardens, far-reaching views and a wealth of period features.
Tucked away along the historic Mount Road, Trefelwy is a distinctive and generously proportioned period home offering a rare combination of character, space and privacy. Believed to date from the 18th century, the property retains a wonderful sense of history while providing extensive accommodation ideally suited to modern family life.
The house offers five bedrooms and five reception rooms, providing an exceptional degree of flexibility for family living, entertaining, working from home or accommodating guests. The principal bedroom benefits from its own en-suite facilities, while the numerous reception rooms create an abundance of opportunities for formal and informal living spaces.
One of the property's most compelling features is its extensive established gardens, which provide a wonderful sense of seclusion and make the most of the property's elevated position and fantastic views across the surrounding landscape. The grounds offer considerable potential for outdoor entertaining, gardening and family enjoyment.
The property also benefits from off-road parking, a car port and useful outbuilding, together with a particularly intriguing historic feature – its cellar. St Asaph City Council's own historic walking guide specifically highlights Trefelwy for its “fascinating cellar with a carved stone cross”, adding an unusual and fascinating dimension to the property's history.
In the 1901 census, the house’s first occupant was Catherine Heaton who lived there with her two daughters and three servants. The house was built by Arthur Heaton who lived in the adjoining half. These are members of the Heaton family in Plas Heaton, Henllan. Trefelwy's history appears to extend well beyond its architectural character. Historical records show the property was occupied in the early 20th century by Louisa Catherine Lewis, whose brother was Bishop of St Asaph and later the first Archbishop of Wales. She was recorded at Trefelwy in the 1911 Census, living there with four servants.
The setting is equally appealing. Mount Road is an established and historic residential route leading directly towards the heart of St Asaph. The City Council notes that the road formed part of the historic stage-coach route into the city and contains a number of fine Victorian houses alongside Trefelwy.
